My Students

English Language Learners from diverse cultural backgrounds with a passion for learning are limited only by their mastery of the English language and the time it takes to master it. While this could describe all of the students in my school, it best describes the ESL population that I have the pleasure of working with.

Awesome learners doing amazing things!

My students are like most of the students within our school community with one major exception; they are all learning English, but their native language is Spanish.

Though it may sound simple, it is a very complex task to listen, speak, read, and write in a language that is new to you, especially when your family is limited in their ability to help you outside of school. Keep in mind, my students are doing this with the same expectations as the native English speaking students in their classes. Books, classwork, required testing, grades, report cards, recess, even lunch - in English. These awesome learners model perseverance daily as they seek academic growth and success!

My Project

These LEGO brick sets will be used to increase students' social and communication skills as they work to create things together.

Working together to build things helps my EL students develop, reinforce, and improve their speaking and listening skills.

They have to communicate with one another to express their thoughts, ideas, and wants or needs. It also requires them to listen to others and their responses.

Social skills are also improved as my students build things together. They learn to share, consider others’ opinions, take turns, be patient, and to give and receive constructive feedback and criticism.
