My Project

For my English language learners with special needs, communication has always proven to be a challenge, as they often present deficits in receptive and expressive skills in both their native language and within the English language. Specifically, my English language learners with special needs struggle with sequencing, vocabulary, answering "wh-" questions, and retelling or describing. Although these skills seem basic, they are anything but for my group of hard-working students. In order to master and maintain these skills, they require hands-on manipulatives, prompts, and resources.

The materials from this project will help to create organized, differentiated, and kinesthetic learning experiences where students are able to practice their English language skills and demonstrate progress of their Individualized Education Plan (IEP) goals.

Students will be able to engage in hands-on activities that focus on sequencing, "wh-" questions, vocabulary, and providing details. Students will be able to use these materials to practice these communicative life-skills through whole group instruction, cooperative learning tasks, and organized independent practice. Students will be able to work with the manipulatives and resources that match their ability and functioning levels, so that instruction is tailored to meet the needs of each of my students. With scaffolded prompting, progress monitoring, and repetition, students will be able to develop their communication skills, and in doing so, my students will be afforded the opportunity to be more autonomous in their own learning. Additionally, being able to master such skills will increase their independence, not only in school or at home, but also within their communities. My diligent students have come a long way, but there is still so much potential to be unlocked within each of them. Help me as I continue to help my students to create their own communication sensation!
