Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

As a Speech-Language Pathologist, I strive to engage, challenge, and inspire growth in my students. I am fortunate to work with children who are culturally and linguistically diverse as well as have special needs. It is my belief that every student possesses unique capabilities that can be shared with others when given the appropriate supports and resources. To challenge and be challenged by my students is a goal that I possess when working with my students. Above all, I challenge my students to understand that I am open to their thoughts, eager to hear their opinions, and thrilled to learn with them and from them.

Language is taught and used in many different ways.

In school, children are using and learning language to make choices, state their opinions, tell stories and make connections. In addition, children are using language and learning language to have conversations with friends, problem-solve as well as understand proper sentence structure and grammar. Furthermore, children are also learning how to comprehend and understand language. I need the right materials in order to support these students develop their language skills.

My Project

Speaking is how we as adults communicate with those around us. It allows us to interact with other people and influence the world around us to get our needs met. But for many children with autism, speech is not an option. These children, often labeled as “non-verbal” may have plenty that they want to communicate with us, but they are unable to speak the words. However, every child has the right to communicate and the fact that these children cannot speak should not take that right away from them.

For these children with autism, there is another option.

This can include using pictures and visual aids. I am requesting this project to be used for my students with special needs, especially those with autism. My students require communication books/boards to express their wants and needs and it is important to have those materials laminated so that the materials can last a sustain a significant amount of wear and tear.
