Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school’s undertaking prepares our students for independent living and thinking, in a safe and respectful therapeutic environment that promotes social and academic development. We also provide our uniquely abled students full access through the effective use of high and low technology tools as part of literacy and communication experiences.

As a Speech and Language Service Provider, I am constantly developing fun and effective ways to present information to teach meaningful and functional communication in a natural way to students with (ASD) Autism Spectrum Disorders and other developmental challenges.

I provide speech services within the classroom which creates many conversation opportunities. Students learn how to self-reflect through group discussions, role-play and other social skills activities. Despite the adversity my students endure, they are learning to emerge from their challenging experiences with a confident sense of self through positive social skills activities.

Upon returning to school this fall, I plan to support students who receive speech/language services and attempt to meet physical distancing guidelines in addition to all safety measures for teachers to ensure optimal safety for all.

There is a lot to be done in order to achieve that.

My Project

Face masks are a powerful tool to prevent COVID-19 transmission, but they also make it more difficult to hear.

Many schools will require face coverings for teachers, and students as they return to in-person teaching and learning.

People with hearing loss and processing issues will have to endure months of frustration as they try to talk to each other through masks.

Because a pandemic is stressful enough already, I decided to work on ways to make it easier to communicate while wearing a face mask.

There are two ways that masks make it harder to understand speech. First, they muffle speech sounds, especially the higher frequencies that help us distinguish between similar sounds. Second, they block visual cues, including facial expressions and lip positions that help us understand speech.

To support my students’ needs it is so important to be certain they hear and understand what is being said.

Using a portable microphone will help us be safe and be heard.
