Commit to Be Fit Camp 2010

My students need new sports equipment like Jump Ropes, Softball bats, Sports bags,Basketballs and Court Stencils to stay active and continue their Sports Program.

My Students

Do you remember what it was like to score your first goal or sink your first basket? Do you remember what it was like when your Volleyball team won their first game for the season? Well imagine not having sports to look forward to or a reason to stay out of trouble. A gift that you can be proud of.

Our group is a Native American High School consisting of many tribes.

Tohono O'Odham, Yaqui, Navajo, Mojave, Apache etc. The purpose is to keep traditions alive while teaching others about their rich culture. While learning their own Native Sports, they are also committed to staying fit by learning healthy lifestyles and learning sports like Basketball, Volleyball, Softball and Soccer.

My Project

Currently because of budget restrictions the kids have lost the funding for their sports program. Though they are fundraising to keep the season running, it's hard to practice with no equipment. So instead what they have done is started a group "Commit To Be Fit" where they learn about healthy eating, learn about combating Diabetes which is HIGH in their society and they are exercising and documenting their progress as they go on this journey. My students need new sports equipment in order to stay active and continue their Sports Program.

It is important to share this project because these kids are already at a disadvantage living on the reservations and not having access to what we as a society consider the norm.

They get up most mornings at 4am to travel 2hrs on the bus to school, they participate in Learning Center after school and never get back home until after 8pm at night. Yet they have the strength and drive to want to continue to play sports.
