My Students
The students in these two sections of an advanced Freshmen English class are a unique group of diverse learners from a variety of ethnic, racial, social, religious, economic, and political backgrounds.
It is because of this diversity that the group brings an energy to the discursive acts in which we engage on a daily basis.
All critical thinkers with creative abilities, they establish their own personal connections to what we are learning, take ownership of the material, respond in a multiplicity of ways, and are ultimately able to extend what happens in the classroom to the real world where its meaning truly takes shape.
My Project
In a literature based department, my students are reading classic coming-of-age novels; those texts that can be read over and over again and still have meaning; those texts that have contemporary relevance despite being from the past. However, I believe we need some new material in order to keep readers engaged and writers analyzing these texts.
We continue to explore how language and literature help us to connect texts to ourselves, our world, other stories, and other voices and for that we need relevant texts from contemporary writers.
Novels are a point of departure in my classroom. It is with the text that we establish connections and take ownership of the stories in order to respond to what we are reading and extend the narratives for real world value. We continue to explore how our choices impact identity and influence our sense of self. We are exploring how rites of passage -- social, cultural, religious, secular -- acknowledge important stages in an individual life. With the right novels, we can engage the dialogic imagination.
