My Students

Our students are in a lower class, rural area. We have a large number of students who are being raised by grandparents, as well as a large number of transient students. Many of our parents are in the service industry which was hit hard when everything closed.

Students are not able to come to school with basic supplies.

They don't have fancy cell phones, or personal devices either. When we went to remote learning, we sent home any pencils we had as well as simple lined paper to do math problems on.

I know our students are anxious about coming back to school. They don't know what to expect, neither do I! But I know I want to help them be as successful as possible.

My Project

When students have the supplies they need, they feel more confident in learning. Students who don't come to school with what they need already feel behind. If I can offer them these supplies, then they will know that I want them to succeed. I often tell them that I will give them the supplies they need and when mom or dad can buy them, then they can reimburse me. They appreciate that and often bring in the supplies after payday. That makes them feel proud and respected!

At this point, we are going back into the classroom 5 days a week.

One of the recommendations is that students do not share materials. The whiteboards are used almost daily to show work, review vocabulary, and answer questions. The additional 30 I have requested will allow me to assign a whiteboard and marker to every student. The binder and dividers are used for Math notes.

This year all of the notes for the entire year will be printed and put into the binder at the beginning of the year. If our class has to go to remote learning, students will have their binder with steps on how to complete assignments. The 48 I have requested will guarantee all my students have the binder ready to go by the end of the first week of school.

The extra packs of paper will be divided and put into their binders. I learned last year that we had students who didn't have any paper at home to work out math problems. The pencils will be used at school, but if we go remote students will receive paper and pencils to go home with to help with remote learning.
