My Students

As a kid growing up I loved reading Calvin & Hobbes. Their adventures were fun, Calvin's imagination was endless, and even my parents thought it was funny. It wasn't until college that I realized how many of the strips were loaded with references or quotes from Plato, Hobbes, Marx, etc.

My students still read Calvin & Hobbes.

They also read and watch Marvel comics such as Thor, Spiderman, Ironman, etc. Though some of my students doodle, many students reach high school and stop thinking that they are capable of drawing. Those Middle School students who used to challenge themselves by drawing unicycles, polar bears, or space ships have become High School students who only feel capable of drawing stick figures. Unfortunately, our education system (and graduation requirements) places too high an emphasis on reading and writing at the expense of other mediums for communication. Some of my students consider themselves to be artists and continue to draw but many have instead given up and consider themselves no longer talented enough to draw. Communicating with images takes practice and knowledge. Lacking an art program our school has limited opportunities for my students to continue practicing the art of turning ideas into images and then communicating those images.

My Project

This project will provide the tools necessary for my students to produce high quality comics. With better supplies like quality pens, pencils and illustrating paper, my students will be able to create comics that reflect their creative abilities and interests. It is my hope that with these supplies and the books on techniques, I will be able to incorporate the creation of comics into more assignments.

Comics are a great medium for students to make creative stories.

It also allows them to share and reproduce images of the world that they live in. A number of the classroom projects we do have a visual element to them. Funding for this project would provide my students with the pencils, pens, and paper to create and ink high quality comics which they can be proud to display on their refrigerators (or in an Art Gallery).
