Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students are bright, inquisitive, and love a challenge. They are always up to tackle something new in the classroom. Many of my students come from disadvantaged backgrounds. I teach enrichment groups for gifted students in grades 1-7 throughout my day. Gifted students come in all shapes, sizes, and abilities. I teach some gifted students with reading disabilities as well as bilingual students still catching up on English skills.

Graphic novel-style science books are fun and engaging and reduce barriers for my students with reading or language challenges.

Helping kids find challenging books that are interesting and accessible to them improves kids' attitudes toward school and improves mental health.

The visuals in these books help students make connections to things they already know and help them develop and retain sophisticated vocabulary.

This is particularly important for bilingual students and students with reading challenges. Each Science Comics book offers a complete introduction to a particular topic—space flight, deep oceans, bridge physics, volcanoes, bats, and more...not to mention, the books are hilarious. These illustrated graphic novels offer wildly entertaining views of their subjects and are a hit with the 3rd- and 4th-grade crowd, although I have had both older and younger students enjoy this series

We were lucky enough to already have many of the books in the series, but there are some new titles we are missing.

I'm also requesting some snacks to have on hand for hungry students who need a boost to get them to the end of the day.

In our rural district, most of the families work in agriculture. Over 80% of students are Hispanic, and many of them are English Language Learners. Most students receive free lunch.
