This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My art class is learning how to draw and create comic book characters of themselves. We have been studying a range of styles from manga to American comic characters. After weeks of creating I want my students to now use their character designs to write comic books of their own. Using my art room to now turn the focus on writing while allowing drawn images to help support their written ideas.

I want my students to learn the foundation of storytelling through comic book arts with a focus on providing literacy support for my second language learners.

The materials requested will allow my students to have mini blank books that they can draw in and design a cover for. Students will get their own set or erases, fun styled pencils, and outline markers, which are all the simple starting materials for drawing a comic. The books will then be on display during class share outs (using the stands requested) so students can take turns reading each others stories.

I find it important to include writing in my art curriculum in order to support key academic skills needed at a high school level as well as provide new engaging ways to write and record stories. I want all of my students to be able to create a comic book about who they are and be given the materials to do so.
