My Students

Located steps away from a lush community garden on our historic East Los Angeles campus, this is the first year of our new environmental science and humanitarian magnet school. We have created a place where a one of a kind indoor/outdoor rural learning space sets the stage for real-world, hands-on curriculum focused on empowering students to be lifelong critical thinkers impacting the environment and global needs. Every day is an opportunity for my students to explore their place in the world and think about how they can make it better!

It’s not easy being a founding member of a new program, but my 7th and 8th grade risk-takers jumped at the chance to be part of something they could build from the ground up.

Students have begun spearheading composting programs, garden club, and gotten their hands dirty tending the small ecosystem they are now responsible for.

Despite the high quality programming and expectations we have for our students, we are still a 100% Title 1 school, where all kids receive free or reduced priced meals. Our ethnic population is approximately 92% Hispanic or Latino, about 17% are English Language Learners (ELLs), and 16% receive Special Education services.

My Project

These materials will go a long way towards meeting my goal of making students skilled, passionate, habitual and critical readers. More importantly, they will help create an inviting, safe space for kids during lunch and breaks. Middle school can be a difficult time for students and a welcoming community to explore one’s interests alone or with other like-minded friends is essential to social and emotional health. During our meetings we have comic book lit circles where small groups of students pick one title they all read so they can talk about the shared text. We study writing and artist styles and attempt write/draw- alikes. We create our own superheroes.

Some days we just read quietly with the doors and windows open, enjoying the cross breeze that blows through the community garden outside my door.

My classroom is a bungalow set back from the main campus and twice a week I give up my lunch so any kid who needs a break from the cacophony of the lunch area has a calming space to visit. Now I just need some more places for them to sit and things to read!
