I knew I was doing something right when my students told me that they enjoyed coming to my classroom because of how clean and welcoming it was.
Everyday it was a battle of who could ask me first to sit in the classroom library to read their book.
As much as I would love for them all to sit in it, space was limited. The excitement to come and ask was amazing, but the disappointment when I said no due to space was unbearable.
The community I serve is of low income families. That small corner with the carpet and huge decorative basketball pillows to some would seem minimal, but to my students it meant the world. To many of my students that was the best place they have to comfortably read their favorite book in this new middle school world.
Students today are shifting from sitting at a desk reading, to being able to lay down, be comfortable, and sometimes listen to music. Flexible seating is used in elementary school, so why can't it be adopted in secondary school? Sixth graders are making a significant change entering secondary school. New teachers, different campus, and having to switch more than one class a day is HUGE. So why not give them something that they are familiar with?
Last year the first thing my students noticed was my library, because of my huge pillows with basketball pillow cases.
This year I want to offer the same joy and more. These materials will allow me to expand the reading library for more flexible seating for my students. Having two reading sections will allow more students to use the area. I want to provide headphones for those students that do not have their own.
I ultimately want to give them the comfort of home in their English class!
