My Students

Hi! We teach a Second Grade ICT Class in Queens. The class consists of a dynamic and spunky bunch of 30 students. Many of our students come from non-English speaking homes, and we are a Title 1 School, meaning many of the children are from low-income households. We are looking to differentiate our classroom seating options so that we can better meet the needs of our students.

We once read a quote that stated, "The capacity to learn is a gift; the ability to learn is a skill; the willingness to learn is a choice" by Brian Herbert.

Many of our students have IEP's, which help us to serve their needs as learners. Learning new information can be quite challenging for our students, and by allowing the children to explore various seating options, it expands their comfort level, and allows them to absorb more information. Slowly but surely, we have been adding new seating options for our students - but we need your help!

My Project

We are hoping for some additional flexible seating options for our Special Education and General Education Students, in the hopes that their comfort will lead them to be more successful students. Even as grown ups, it is difficult to remain seated for 6 hours a day - how on Earth can we expect 6 and 7 year olds to do so!

We have introduced the concept of flexible seating to our students as they do their independent and group work.

The idea is that all of us learn differently, and we will all be more productive if we are in an environment that is comfortable for us. Many students work well while sitting on a stool, leaning on a standing desk, and while working their core while sitting atop an excercise ball.

Through using DonorsChoose, we are hoping to expand our seating options to allow our students even more flexibility!
