This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
The majority of my students come from low income households, and many of them have dealt with more in their few short years than a lot of adults.
My students have varying levels of academic achievement and social, emotional, and behavioral knowledge.
Some students are reading above grade level, while some students continue to struggle with basic early literacy skills. Some students can deal with challenges and problem-solve a social issue with finesse, while others have a hard time identifying and dealing with their own emotions.
I do whole class social-emotional lessons and assist in providing large group reading interventions to this second grade class. The students feel like grown-ups, but are still little children who prefer to be on the carpet than at their desks. The current carpet in the classroom has been at the school for years, is not big enough for the whole class to sit on, and doesn't have any defined spaces so that the students can see where "their" spot is. This can result in some challenging behavior.
A new classroom rug with squares for each child would show them they have their own spot in the class, and that they are an important part of the class community.
In our social skills lessons, the students are learning about personal space, how to manage emotions and problem-solve, and they would be better able to focus on those skills while on the carpet if they had adequate room. Since school budgets are always a concern in an urban district that serves many low-income students, nice things are hard to come by, and a brand new carpet would boost the spirits of students and staff in the classroom.
