My Students

My 6th graders are a diverse group of preteens who love to read, write, draw, and explore. They thrive in interactive small group learning environments within my classroom. They love meeting in their "book clubs" and enjoy challenging group projects. To instill independence in my students, I encourage them to "discover what works best for them" in terms of their independent learning style. Some kids learn better by sitting on the floor with their laptop, notebook, and pencil. Some kids want to sit on yoga balls. Some kids need time to stand!

I give students the freedom to read the kinds of books they love and allow them to write creatively, so I would also like to provide flexible seating as often as possible.

The more comfortable and confident they are as 6th graders, the more likely they will succeed academically and emotionally in 7th and 8th grade and beyond.

My Project

Students love having options in seating! Students need brain breaks. They need to stretch and move around the classroom. Sitting in hard plastic chairs/small desks six hours a day is no fun. My "kids" are voracious readers & amazing writers, and are excited to get to school and learn. Please help me give my students more choice in seating for reading and writing lessons in my classroom. We recently had our carpet replaced with tile, and the floor is cold/uncomfortable.

My students need a comfy "classroom carpet" area to meet for Book Clubs, mini lessons, conferences, and group interactive projects.

Students also LOVE reading in beanbag chairs or with cozy pillow back rests/large pillows. Kids learn better when they are relaxed and comfortable! In 6th grade, teachers work tirelessly to instill independence in our students while meeting all their individual needs. We teach students how to get organized, how to be more responsible, how to study, and how to take ownership in their learning. Flexible seating will allow for the differentiation that is needed for ALL our kids.

The transition into middle school can be a rocky road for some students. Providing a comfortable, organized classroom environment where kids feel relaxed and happy is key to success for these kids. Please help me offer some new options for these incredible students. Any tool that can help provide a calm, welcoming, organized classroom is a bonus and a win win situation for all. These kids are the future! I want to provide them every opportunity imaginable...and make middle school a fun, memorable learning experience they will never forget.
