Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our classroom is a fun, safe, and engaging space for students to learn and not be afraid to make mistakes. With the help of some flexible seating the students will improve academically. One of our students has benefited greatly to help his sensory needs through O.T., a weighted vest, a weighted pillow that I stitched for him and a seat cushion for his chair. Now he is able to engage more with us because his sensory needs are being met.

With this funding we can improve our meeting area so that our kids can relax, get the wiggles under control, and be involved more during discussions and read alouds!

We want kids to be able to keep moving like their little bodies naturally do - but also be able to stay focused so they can deepen their understanding. Flexible seating is the answer to making both the students and teacher happy in this situation.

Our school is a Title 1 school in Queens serving the community's children grades K-5. The student body is 97% children of minority background, majority low-income and a high population of ELL's/Special Education students. My class is a self contained 12-1 special education class!

My Project

My students are unique. Students with sensory/attention issues, hyperactivity, and hypo-sensitivity (seeking stimulation) can make teaching challenging when the students are physically uncomfortable. Sitting on these bean bags or wobble cushions will help center the students and provide the stimulation they need to focus on what we are learning.

These two new options for flexible seating will provide the students with more Student Choice to explore how they are able to learn best- and they will love it!

They will be so happy to receive this as a gift from our donors to sit in for discussions, independent reading time and even when they play and learn valuable social skills interacting with one another.
