Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Bean bags!! While reading in class, some of my students sit on the carpet trying to get comfortable. Having bean bags in the classroom would be a more pleasant spot to relax in as they read ?The Outsiders, Don Quijote de la Mancha, or any other book of their choice. I usually encourage my students to get in the mood to enjoy the reading, so I play music, dim the lights a little, and try to clear some space on the floor while the young readers either select a book of their choice or I read out loud during my Advanced Placement (AP) Spanish Language class and my Read-In period. At our school, Oscar de la Hoya ?nimo Charter High School (ODLHA), literacy is highly stressed in order to improve vocabulary and help prepare our pupils for the AP exam, the SAT's, and for college and life in general. ODLHA is a small, public, charter high school that serves low-income minority students in urban Los Angeles. I teach all grade levels, 10th-12th grade AP Spanish and 9th graders in what is called "Read-In", a period in which the main purpose is to expose our college bound students to great literature and the themes found in books. I already have a small stock of books that boys and girls can select from and the school recently received a generous donation from a nearby business. The administration has also provided us with class sets of different literature pieces and sometimes even recordings of the stories so that students can follow along with their copy. With your generous donation of bean bags, our teenagers can gain a deeper appreciation for literature and continue the practice of reading for pleasure way beyond the classroom doors. I teach about 150 students throughout the week and they would all have access to the sitting area with bean bags at any given point. The experience of a pleasant reading would be a good incentive for them to maintain the practice for a long time to come.
