Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are amazing! They attend a low-income, urban public charter high school on the north side of Chicago. 25% of our student body qualifies for special education services. Our students are Latino, black, white, middle-eastern, and speak a total of 40 different languages. Since we are a charter school, students live in neighborhoods all over Chicago.

As seniors, they are busy preparing for college, which is incredibly exciting since most will be the first from their families to attend!

With the support of our college counselors and various school initiatives to expose them to college life starting in 9th grade, we are starting to see more and more students attend four year universities all over the country.

One thing that makes my students incredibly special is how they value each other's differences. Our school has a high percentage of special needs students and the student body supports these students on a daily basis. The students and the school community also values cultural differences which we celebrate daily as well as annually through a popular school event called Culture Fest.

My Project

I have been lucky enough to teach in a double classroom which means I have an abundance of extra space that is currently going unused. With the new addition of the whiteboard table and wobble stools, students will be able to collaborate on various projects and activities in my American Gothic class; the most exciting project occurs when we read The Shining and students plan, create, and run their own escape room for peers and staff. Through adding these new tables with a whiteboard top, students will be able to brainstorm how they want to transform our space and how they want to incorporate a specific gothic theme into the project. They will be able to build off the ideas of their peers in a fun and visual way.

Flexible seating options will allow students to choose a space in the room where they can focus best.

The stools will allow for students to remain engaged while also allowing them to fidget and move when needed. The bungee chair can be pulled up to the table or moved to a separate location for independent reading and work.

The seating options will also serve as a positive incentive for staying on-task and engaged in classroom work since these are two requirements for using the flex seating.
