My Students

The demographics of my classroom consist of seventy-eight percent second generation Haitian Americans, ten percent African-Americans and two percent Hispanic students between the ages of twelve and fourteen. Their economic level is very low as evidenced by the ninety-five percent school population which receives free or reduced price lunch vouchers. They are very extrinsic and needy (as with most children in this age bracket), but they love to learn and sparkle when they are able to have accountable conversations about the lesson.

According to Paul Gagnon, "The values that sustain democracy are not natural habits: we are not born with the devotion to human equality and freedom, to social and economical justice, to truth and the rule of law, to acceptance of diversity and mutual aid, to personal restraint and self-respect - all these need teaching, learning, and practice".

My Project

The study of civics helps students understand how government works and it provides them with knowledge about how to influence government as a citizen. Increasing my students' active participation in their community, state and nation helps to spark activism towards projects they are passion about.

Creating current event journals which focus on geographical, social, political and economical ramifications allows the readers to see the world through the eyes of children.

Additionally, it allows my students to reflect and internalize the world around them (not as complainers but as trailblazers), pure and simple, void of political and economical distractions.

The journals with color paper, chart paper, headphones and ink will allow my students to chronologically reflect on current events and create works of art showing their interpretation of the events. Hopefully, this annual activity will keep students engaged and life long problem solvers.
