My Students

I work with children from a low-income area who are students with multiple disabilities. Many of them have experienced trauma in their lives and have difficulty coming to school. Our classes serve students with a range of disabilities, including intellectual disabilities, emotional disturbance, autism spectrum disorder, and specific learning disabilities.

The typical student in my class reads at a kindergarten grade level and many struggle with basic phonics and number sense.

Ninety percent of our students are African-American or Latino. The opportunity and achievement gaps are apparent among our student population.

Our classrooms are starved of any kind of art or any other creative outlets. Please help me.

My Project

I have the space in my classroom to give my kids room to relax and learn to enjoy reading. Most of them don't have a place that's silent long enough for them to read. This place can be whatever they choose it to be. A place to rest for my children with emotional needs or a place to be alone for my students on the spectrum. It will have multiple uses.

They will be able to lay down on a nice carpet instead of a cold tile floor and enjoy picking up a book or toy and being in a safe spot.

That is so important to parents and teachers. will you help my children have a safe place to enjoy?
