This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My school serves an inner city, high poverty, bilingual student population. My students face many challenges in and out of the classroom on a daily basis. My goal in the classroom is to create interactive, hands-on activities to motivate them and keep them engaged with the content.
Through my lessons and the relationships I build with my students, I hope to motivate them to become lifelong learners.
Despite the cultural differences my students and I share, we have built a strong community in my classroom based on respect and understanding. My students may face hardships outside of school, but they know that our classroom will always be a safe place for them.
My Project
This year, I am focusing on helping my students practice their reading comprehension strategies with books they will actually enjoy! I am accomplishing this goal through small group literature circles with relevant and motivating young adult chapter books. The first round of literature circles was a huge success! My students were excited about the books they chose and read with a vigor I don't see when using our language arts textbook.
This project would greatly help my ELL students practice crucial reading strategies.
I am looking to increase our chapter book options and include a couple of classics to challenge my higher level students.
