My Students

Our students love to learn new things! Our school is for students with special needs who, because of severe emotional and behavioral issues, have not been able to learn successfully at their regular schools. They learn a little bit differently, and we are able to accommodate their differences and keep them in school and in class!

Our school provides a safe place where students can make mistakes, learn coping skills and master problem-solving strategies while continuing to be exposed to the district-wide academic curriculum.

Instead of being suspended or removed from the learning environment for extended parts of the day, our daily goal is to keep students in the learning environment.

My Project

We just started our container garden last October and it is a huge hit all across the school! Our garden is open to all students and classes in our K-12 alternative setting and students ask everyday if they can be a part of it. People sometimes look at our garden and lament that it is concrete, or small, or enclosed by a rusty chain-link fence - but, I have to tell you, we love every inch of our garden and the students learn so much about growing plants for food and beauty, we would love to give our garden a face lift, of sorts!

We want to use patio paint to create some artwork and add color to our concrete paradise.

The students have big ideas about how they would like to paint the concrete "benches" as we call them. You can catch a glimpse of them in Ms. Campbell's profile photo here. The students have lots of ideas of things to paint in our garden. Keeping to a STEM / STEAM theme, their ideas include: labeled plant diagrams, rainbows, when to plant what diagrams, weather tools and weather events. We want to use the wire to hang pots onto the chain-link fence. As we surfed the World Wide Web for ideas on how to dress up chain-link we came across a photo of a fence covered in plants growing in 2 liter plastic bottles - the students loved this idea for more planting space and were quick to point out that we would also be recycling as we collected the 2-liter bottles! These materials are going to be used to make our garden even more beautiful than it already is - and no one will be remarking on the concrete or chain link anymore except to compliment it!
