My Students

Creating a functional kitchen from scratch to help students with Mental Retardation learn to cook and be independent.

I currently teach students with Mental Retardation between the ages of 14 to 22.

My students also range greatly in their ability to complete certain tasks and I am constantly modifying lessons to meet each student's individual needs. They are incredible kids and have kindred spirits. These students are hard workers and love travel training and cooking. I want to wake up and go to work every day because of these kids. These students currently attend a low performing high school. The students are on the alternate curriculum yet no supplies are provided such as any cooking items and parents do not have the means to donate to their child's classroom.

My Project

My goal is to create a functional kitchen for students to learn to prepare meals for themselves. My students will learn to cook for themselves and their families, which are their primary caretakers for the rest of these students lives. My students will learn to read labels on packages and make healthier food choices. In addition, we are opening up a coffee cart as part of their work training and additional baked goods will be made by the students and sold with the coffee. Over the past several years, my students have fallen through the cracks due to apathetic and uncaring teachers. I took over the program this year and I am starting from scratch to provide these kids with a wonderful and enriched learning environment.

Some of my students have been attending this high school for three years and never once have they cooked in their classroom, which is part of their school curriculum.

These students are being deprived of their education.
