My Students

My students are new to the art of ceramics but they are dedicated to improving their skills and learning new techniques. They need glazes to bring their finished pottery to life. These glazes will allow them to add personal flair to their work.

My students attend an urban school with a high level of poverty.

In art class, students of all ability levels work together. They may have special needs due to physical challenges or learning disabilities. Some are English language learners and some are gifted. Art gives them the opportunity to explore skills that they may not have known they had, and it's exciting to see them find those hidden talents. They find ceramics especially exciting because everyone starts with a simple ball of clay but the possibilities are endless and everyone can be successful. They make connections to every culture around the world because ceramics is an ancient art form. Over the course of two semesters, they will go from novice to expert!

My Project

We are requesting glazes that are designed for the beginning artist. Gallons of glaze in the primary colors will provide flexibility and the starting point for mixing any color the students choose. A variety pack of special effects glazes with crystal specks and flecks will inspire students to use them in interesting ways. A set of underglaze crayons will be a special treat for students who have an especially inspired idea in mind and want to try something different. Two pints of dark blue glaze, the students' favorite color, will be in high demand everyday. The variety of possibilities will give us many options.

It is rare that high school students have the opportunity to take a full year of ceramics.

In a high poverty school like ours, it is a struggle to fund special programs, no matter how special. Due to cuts to faculty, a ceramics program that used to serve 200 students a year now only serves 85, and cuts to funding make purchases like these very difficult. These glazes will bring new life to the program! The class will get a boost in morale as well as creativity.
