My Students

I teach 8th grade math and social studies at a low income school in rural North Carolina. I am very passionate about my job and love to keep the energy levels up. Keeping the students engaged allows for better retention of the material. I try to keep things varied and cater to their needs and wants.

I teach at a low income middle school, about 60% of the students receive free or reduced lunch and the school itself does not have much money either.

Many of my students are English Language Learners. Although this makes school very difficult for them, they all have great ambitions and want to do great things with their life. I make it a point to let them know they can do anything and that there are so many people around the world rooting for them. They find this hard to believe and I know that your contribution to their future would just fill their hearts with joy. Many people find 8th graders to be scary but the school year is just so thrilling and fills me with so much joy. I can't wait to see who they will become by June. Unfortunately, the families struggle to supply their children with the supplies they need to succeed in school. This is why I am coming to you for help. Please help show my students that they are loved, and truly can succeed this year in eighth grade.

My Project

I have found that 8th graders love to be creative. We use interactive notebooks in which they take their notes on the left pages of the book and then proceed to create an entry on the right which demonstrates their understanding of the topic at hand. These can be pictures, maps, poems or journals. For this reason, I need many arts and craft supplies for my classroom. The students go through many crayons, colored paper, graph paper, glue and scissors throughout the year. The more creative the students become, the deeper their understanding of the history lessons becomes. At the same time, I have found that using colors, cutting and pasting foldables and games make math much more comprehensible, as well as more fun. It's great for the students to highlight different variables in different colors. This is very helpful when combining like terms. They also love centers in math. A great way to keep the students engaged is through hands on learning about the subject.

My students tended to go unnoticed in the past.

English is their second language, and for this reason, they have been expected to fail. This is not fair and breaks my heart that many of them feel they are not worthy of a college education. I want to show them the beauty of a strong education, that people do care about them and prove to them that they have the ability to succeed in this world. They need to know that it is OK to ask for help as long as they do not take advantage of others.
