Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Most of my students don't have much, that is why I always do art projects using recycled items, so that when they are home, they can recreate and teach their family what we have done. However, every project, no matter how crafty I get, needs some basic materials.

My students are of low socioeconomic background, and have not been exposed to the arts growing up.

Many students are amazed when we mix colors, it's truly magic to them. I remember my first year asking them to create a cover for their portfolio where their work would be kept throughout the year. I had asked them to draw anything that they wanted, and to make the most beautiful picture, like a book, if the cover was their best work, it would entice visitors to open and look inside their portfolio. There was silence in the room, and then hands shot up. "Can I draw a dog? Can I draw a cat? My mom? A super hero?" the kids could not believe that they were free to just draw and use the multitude of crayons and markers that I had brought. When I bring paint, cheers erupt, and don't get me started about clay, it's like Christmas in July. Please help me in getting basic supplies in my art class, so that I can continue to wow them!

My Project

What I am requesting is simple art materials, such as crayons, markers, and oil pastels. Oil pastels are awesome when we talk about color mixing, it's a mix between paint and crayons, and fun for all ages. I've also asked for some mannequins, as the students love to sketch people in action such as superheroes.

With all of the budget cuts happening in NYC public schools, my students are very lucky to still have the opportunity to do art and explore their own creativity.

Keep the dream alive, and help me in my endeavor to instill passion and beauty in their lives!
