Our school boundaries crosscut the advantaged and disadvantaged portions of our city. Multiple languages are spoken by students and parents as we have a true melting pot of cultures represented on campus. In the past four years, we have seen an increase in students from multi-family housing units and with special education needs. Given that current census data considers Arabic speaking immigrants as 'White/Caucasian for demographic purposes, our percent of White students are at forty-four percent; however, most of our new English Learners now speak Arabic or Chaldean instead of Spanish. We have fourteen hundred students who are eligible for the Free or Reduced-Price Lunch program and our School Site Council approved for us to be a Title One schoolwide program.
My Project
Colored markers and post its are a staple in our classroom. Donors Choose has been gracious to help us supply my classroom allowing for the department's budget to go towards chemicals and other lab equipment. The markers DC gave us two years ago are beginning to run out of ink, so it is time for more.
We use color frequently to enhance the models we make when discussing phenomena or analyzing lab results.
During today's activity, I noticed that there were no longer enough markers for my afternoon classes to finish their projects on time. We also make good use of the colored sticky notes, but the request I made to DC over the summer turns out to not be enough given the extra class I have this year.
More than half of students from low‑income households
