Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students are in need of quality art supplies. Throughout the school year, my 5th graders are tasked with creating a number of visual art-based projects: designing a monument, zines, brochures, advertisements, and backdrops and props for Reader's Theatre, to name a few. In addition to these literacy focused projects, my students are eager to participate in school-wide artistic activities such as door decorating contests, designing a class flag, and creating decorations for various holiday celebrations (Dia de los Muertos, Chinese New Year, Black History Month, etc.) In order to effectively complete these projects, my students need a class set of high-quality drawing and coloring supplies.

While some students are lucky enough to have access to their own school supplies, most do not.

A majority of my 5th graders rely on basic supplies provided by the school or donated from an outside source (pencils, notebooks, folders, erasers, tissues, etc.) Having access to brand-name, high-quality supplies would be a luxury to my students. This donation would allow all students the ability to participate in creative assignments rather than sitting out due to lack of materials.

Many of my current students are especially artistically talented. I would love to highlight these skills within the ELA classroom more often, but am conscious of the inequities that exist within my diverse group of students. This donation would allow all students the opportunity to engage in school and class projects regardless of which school supplies their families were able to donate in September.
