My Students

My students are the best! Our school serves zoned students in a high-need, low socio-economic, full-of-love neighborhood. Many attend local after-school programs and during the school year, spend most of their reading and writerly lives in the classroom.

My students have tons of stories to tell.

Outside of class time, they can be heard sharing their memories and ideas with their classmates while waiting on line for lunch, walking to the bathroom, or whispering to each other as they walk to a station to get supplies.

My Project

During Writer's Workshop, students start off by telling stories of events that they remember. To help with the task of recording memories and to give importance to the job of an author, we use colored pens, colored paper, paper with pretty borders, etc. to help show the importance of recording and sharing ideas.

My students use pens to reiterate the idea that their ideas, like adults' ideas, are important, as well as to track their edits and revisions.

By just crossing out lightly, and not erasing, they get to look back and reflect on their work as they grow as writers and learners.
