Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach a 3rd grade bilingual class in Washington Heights that loves hands-on learning! As my students all entered this year with startlingly low literacy levels, they understand concepts best when they can be presented in a clear, visual, and interactive way. Try as I may, with my classroom's very limited resources, I often must design lessons by improvising with materials, which don't last long enough to reuse and practice with.
I have found three large pocket charts with wonderfully designed, unique, and colorful layouts that can go miles toward helping students understand such difficult concepts as main idea, compare and contrast, and web organizing. The creative design, such as the "Main Idea Hamburger," or the oversized "Venn Diagram" will help these concepts materialize, in language my students can understand. Becuase they are so child-friendly, students can practice with their own hands in small, cooperative groups, thus providing them with the added bonus of practice with cooperation and social skills.
Help bring our students' reading and writing skills and concepts to life!
