Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My classes consist of a very diverse group of 7th grade students, from a variety of backgrounds. More than 75% of my students are eligible for free lunch. Most importantly, they are very bright and eager to learn.

The students in my classes are working hard towards a high-stakes ELA test, and they need all the resources they can get in order to help them reach their goals and achieve academic success.

They enjoy facilitating group discussions and showing off their close-reading skills. My students are great collaborators, and together they form a tight-knit classroom community that I am extremely proud of.

My Project

Every school year, students are often asked to retain various handouts, reference charts, scaffolds, and other important documents that may need to be found quickly for use during a lesson, while preparing for an assessment, or to assist during a close read. Unfortunately, many of my students do not possess the organizational skills necessary to keep track of such materials. They often misplace, or even lose many important handouts and other printed resources within days of receiving them. Recently, I have made a concerted effort to better organize, and carefully coordinate, some of the materials my students receive during the week. I started using a binder system that allows students to keep all their ELA notes and handouts in one place, and the binder never leaves the room. Although the binders do help keep their materials in one place, students are still struggling to organize all of similar looking white sheets of paper within their binders, unable to differentiate between what is essential and what is.....junk.

Using a variety of colored paper and card stock to create a system of organizing these essential handouts would help students to quickly reference what is needed immediately, dramatically reducing the amount of class time wasted searching for materials that are, more often than not, already lost.

For example, unit vocabulary terms and definitions, along with any other vocabulary-related reference sheets, could be printed on bright yellow paper while handouts that refer to various close reading strategies could be printed in bright green, etc. Learning to then sort these handouts by color would naturally increase students' organizational skills, enabling them to locate important documents with ease.
