Here at my NY middle school our students can apply to be a Studio Art Major. These promisingly talented and very diverse group of kids get the chance to have 4 periods a week of studio art. These budding artists start our program in 6th grade and stick with it until high school.

These young artists need the materials to help them along to find their artist voices. With tight budgets at home and here at school, their talents should not suffer for a lack of GOOD quality materials.

To help these young artists, I introduce them to the wonders of color through a journey called ColorFest. The students will first work in groups to create a design that pays homage to a single color. They will brainstorm about all the things that they associate with one color, agree on a list and then a unified design that they will paint on the watercolor paper in tempera. Continuing on their journey, the students will now paint self-portraits that express an emotion. Using a mono-chromatic palette again, the students must match their desired emotion to a likely color. For example: if they feel "sad" they will work in a blue palette. Within each emotion they will mix their own colors to complete this painting. From there the students will be introduced to Abstraction, images that do not show anything recognizable, and create individual paintings using ONLY the primary colors or the secondary colors. Introducing poetry to the mix, the students will be asked now to find a favorite poem and using all the colors of the palette, illustrate this poem (not unlike "The Midnight Ride of Paul Revere" by Grant Wood). Finally the student will complete Fantasy landscapes inspired by Van Gogh's Starry Night.

Giving my students quality materials that match their enthusiasm is of up most importance. No young artist should have to sacrifice for lack of supplies and your generosity will help them show the school just how talented they can be.
