My students need good quality pencils, colored pencils, crayons, markers and drawing paper to express themselves.
FULLY FUNDED! Mr. Baldwin's classroom raised $424
This project is fully funded
My 7th grade students are in the middle of there 3 years of concentrated art studio study. This talented and diverse group of students get studio art 4 times per week and are well on their way to creating quality portfolios for the high school application process.
With tight budgets at home and here at school, these talented young artists should not suffer for a lack of GOOD quality supplies to help them express themselves.
I think it is very important for students to observe and learn how to observe and I teach my students this skill through Still Life Drawing. Looking at something and rendering it as realistically as possible promotes this critical thinking skill. The students begin this process through a series of small close-up observations of objects in both pencil and color. They then move on to drawing a still life in pencil with detail and shadow on large good quality drawing paper.
Then the fun begins....
The budding artists are asked to complete several studies in color of a centrally located still life. They are then introduced to Henri Matisse through his painting "Green Strip", a painting of his wife done in vivid and strongly contrasting colors . We discuss how and why Matisse would be so EXPRESSIVE with his colors. They then look at still life paintings by Matisse such as "Harmony in Red" and "Red Studio" to show them that he did this with objects as well.
The students, now inspired by Matisse, will complete a large color still life drawing EXPRESSIVELY. Using any drawing material they wish, with as much or as little color as they want to complete the drawing.
Giving my students the quality materials to express themselves is vital. These budding artists expression should not suffer for a lack of good quality materials and your generosity will help them show our school and their prospective high schools how expressive they are.
