My Students

"Colors speak all languages." - Joseph Addison. Our world thrives with brilliant colors and visual expression as our students thrive when learning through hands-on play and exploring their passions. We need vibrant visuals to help them succeed in self-expression.

My students are creative, inquisitive, sensory seeking 1st graders in a 6:1:1 classroom at a D75 school in Manhattan.

They love to explore the world around them with their 5 senses and are visual learners. Since they have Autism and developmental delays, it is often difficult for them to process information through black and white text so we really need a color printer (and cartridges too!). The students require hands-on visual models and materials to stay engaged in lessons and connect academic concepts to real world practice. These materials include pictures/symbols and realistic images in order for them to express themselves and process receptive language. Visuals also helps our kids with literacy, as they connect pictures to text and make choices when verbal language is challenging or overwhelming.

My Project

Students will use pictures of people, objects, emotions, and concepts, printed with a color printer, to express and share their ideas when they cannot access verbal vocabulary. They will make connections between themselves and others and better comprehend literacy, mathematical, and other academic concepts through the use of engaging visual symbols. For example, it makes much more sense to describe a family member (i.e. "My mom has blue eyes") when using a color picture, or identify Clifford the big Red dog when identifying characters and sequencing a story. Our students often maintain regulation and engagement through sensory play and hands-on practice. For example, we make our own play-doh or cook a recipe by following visual steps. The more accurate and engaging the visuals are, the easier it is for our students to access and engage with the material (think of picture of a colorful toucan in the vibrant green jungle vs. a black and white photo of animals and their habitats).

I strive to teach my students independence, self care, and social skills through dynamic project and sensory based learning.

This requires captivating images, printed using a color printer and toner, to help pull our students into the world around them, which is often a huge challenge for students with Autism. We want them to be aware of and participate in the vibrant brilliance of everyday life through images printed in color, rather than black and white.
