Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I’m sure many of your fondest memories of elementary school are as colorful as mine: a hefty dose of red and yellow fall leaves, orange pumpkins, green christmas trees, red hearts, green shamrocks, pink flowers, white bunnies, and a rainbow assortment of…well, rainbows. Practically every project created in elementary school requires these colorful basics: crayons and construction paper. It seems we can never have enough of these, and there are just no substitutes.

On a daily basis, literacy and STEM lesson plans call for “enrichment” activities to activate student creativity for deeper learning.

To plan those activities, I have learned to improvise in a lot of ways to make up for deficiencies in classroom supplies, but crayons and construction paper are the essentials that must be available at all times.

Our school ran out the paper budget within weeks of the start of school, and most of that budget is devoted to copy bond. Understandable, but still unacceptable. Ask any elementary school teacher which is more costly and harder to supply, sheet by sheet: I guarantee you the answer is construction paper. Even just one case of assorted colors would help so much to make a suitable environment for those colorful, enriching activities that should be a fundamental part of the joy of learning for my first graders.
