Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach 7 children within the Autism spectrum. I have one first-grader, two second-graders, one third-grader, one fourth-grader, and two fifth-graders. Each one is unique and has their own strengths and weakness. I want each of them to grow up to be as productive and independent as they can become.

We want to become productive adults.

We want to be accepted by others for the person we are rather than as someone who isn't accepted because we might be different. We have feelings just like anyone else. We participate as much as possible with the other students at our school.

Although we might not think the same way many people think, we have our own hopes and dreams and want to be productive adults. We are just as curious about the world as most people are.

My Project

Color pictures in their daily assignments helps my students relate words to the pictures. This cues them to the meaning of the words. When they relate a word to a picture, it helps them remember the word. Color helps remember words.

My students tend to be visual learners.

The program we use is Unique Learning System. It has pictorials to help my students remember words. Watching a student recall a word because he has a visual cue means he can now understand words and their meanings. It is like having a lightbulb go on.
