Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Each year my students exclaim with wonder the first time they mix their own colors in the art room. This year we haven't done as much exploration with paint and color study because our paint and general material supply is limited. Please help us fill our art room with color!

My students range in age from Pre-K to 8th grade.

Our school is a Title I , 100% free lunch school, so most students come from environments of economic hardship. Most students have little to no experience with art materials until they get to school. Most don't have crayons or markers at home. Almost everyone has only painted once or twice in their lifetime. I want to make color and exploration with paint a more important part of their art experience. With a donation of paint and markers and paper we can expand our painting lessons to repeated experiences throughout the year.

My Project

Having painting materials in the classroom will allow my students to do intense artist studies on painters and their techniques. Students will learn the painting process. They will be able to mix their own colors, as real artists do. They will learn the vocabulary of painting and they will learn about the tools and materials of the craft. They will learn about primary and secondary colors, complimentary colors, shade, and value. They will also gain a greater sense of purpose as they freely experiment and discover the colors they can make through mixing. Students will learn about brushstroke and texture. Lastly, students will make a connection to the world of art by doing a painting themselves rather than just looking at reproduction or a picture hanging in a museum.

My students are New York City kids.

They live in one of the greatest cities of art in the world. They are a subway ride away from the amazing paintings housed in The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Yet, they have almost no painting experience. Please make the world of art tangible to them! Give them the opportunity to add color to their lives and explore and learn. It will make the cultural institutions around them and the wonder of their city much more meaningful and beautiful to them.
