Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students come from mostly working-class, first and second-generation Latino families. My school is completely immersed in and enhanced by the surrounding community where deep familial roots provide a vast well of cultural knowledge and experience that students learn to incorporate as they can into their learning. Adventures in untapped creative knowledge is what my art class holds for my students every school year. Students are introduced to projects that allow for both creative exploration and skill development. At the end of this specific project, I'd like for my students to have gained improved dexterity with their hands as it relates to the forming and shaping of three-dimensional objects that allow students to express themselves as well as possibly creating object for utilitarian uses.

Most of my students start off either in Pre-K or Kindergarten, by the time they leave for middle school I have seen a majority of their development educationally, socially, and academically.

The initial wonder they have in the art room becomes even more so as they develop their motor skills and realize more and more how to use the different tools art class offers them. Hand development through growth and continued use of their hands with art tools such as pencils, crayons, markers, and brushes improves students’ dexterity and shows them how capable they can be when it comes to artistic creation.

My Project

Students will create a sculpture using low-fire clay and shape them with their hands and use tools designed specifically for clay. Their finished pieces or sculptures will be decorated with glazes and underglazes to give their creations bright and vibrant colors enhancing their individuality as well as their creative flair. Using hand-molding techniques from in-class demonstrations, and videos viewed during class instruction will help students learn proper techniques in creating three-dimensional sculptures that allow them to expand their creative skills from the two-dimensional environment of paper, up and out into the three-dimensional environment allowing for hands-on exploration of shape, size, form, depth, and texture.

The necessary implements such as clay molding and shaping tools, colored underglazes and glazes, and brushes designed specifically for application of the glazes to the clay sculptures will provide an additional outlet of expression for my students.

Using cultural cues, such as familial origin, provides the palette that the colored glazes can help bring forth in the students' work.
