Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Give my high school students the opportunity to visit a college campus beyond the limits of the city, before it is too late.

I co-teach English in the Bronx at a small secondary school that currently serves some 580 students in grades 6 through 12.

Unlike other community schools of similar size throughout New York City, TAPCo selects a large percentage of its students through a process of auditions for its various arts programs. The school aims to prepare all of its students for college and for careers in the arts. In addition to an academic curriculum, students take classes in voice, dance, theater, and the visual arts as well as in film and digital media. Similar to the community in which it is located, the ethnic breakdown of the school is 69.3% Hispanic/Latino, followed by 26.93% Black or African-American. More than 25% of the students receive services for a range of disabilities; approximately 5% have an English Language Learner status; and the vast majority receive free lunch.

My Project

My students are bright and talented and are eagerly preparing for college. While they have great potential, many have never had the opportunity to explore environments beyond the densely congested and populated area of the Bronx in which our high school is located. Every day they experience the blaring noise emanating from local traffic and car repair shops, the burning odors from the slaughter house across the avenue, and the unsightly view of the vacant lot across the street. Every day, my students navigate around unscrupulous drug dealers to reach the safety of the school; and a safe haven it is. Once inside, my high school juniors and seniors are busily readying themselves for the transition to college. Applications are looming, PSATs and SATs are underway, and my high school students are frequented by visitors from city and state schools alike. Many have participated in the College Now program at Lehman College and have demonstrated the ability to complete college level courses.

With this proposal, I am requesting support to charter a bus to visit Stony Brook or Purchase College, or other nearby campuses in January.

This one-day field trip will enable graduating seniors and juniors to tour a campus, meet with admissions officers, and arm themselves with information about college life. This first-hand experience will enable them to make the best possible decision about the college environment that will best suit their needs as they embark on their post-secondary education.
