Help Ms. Stork

I teach eleventh grade English at a poverty-stricken school in the Arkansas Delta. All students here receive free lunch, and several charities provide free uniforms for the many students who cannot afford school clothes. Teachers receive no supply stipend, and nearly all provide a constant flow of basic supplies such as pencils, pens, and paper to the students in our school. But we English teachers are faced with the additional task of supplying novels for our classrooms. In spite of these budgetary constraints, my students have risen above and beyond expectations in their literary skills. Our school has consistently been on the “distressed” schools list for Arkansas due to low test scores. Every month the eleventh graders take a shortened practice exam; this enables the teachers to pinpoint deficiencies in skills and estimate our students’ chances of scoring proficient on the end of course exam. At the beginning of this school year, our students scored on average 43%; on our latest test the students averaged 67% of questions correct! This huge jump in scores- across all students: regular to advanced to AP- has shown our students that their hard work studying and effort toward their education really can pay off. One major aspect of our literacy plan was to increase the volume of literature read by students. We asked every student to read 25 “books” this year, where 100 novel pages equaled a book, and magazines, textbooks, and other literature each added to the total. Halfway through the year, my kids have averaged over 8 books read. One student has even racked up 66 books after getting wrapped up in Harry Potter’s adventures! These amazing test scores and unbelievable response to reading has inspired me to take my top readers on a trip to a local university. On this trip, students would experience a day in the life of a college student. They would be able to meet writing professors, eat lunch in a dorm cafeteria, and take a campus tour. The day would end with a question and answer session with alumni from our high school that currently attend the university. The qualification for being invited on the field trip is the student must be one of the top 20 readers in their grade (judged on # of books read). This will motivate even the most reluctant readers to try to boost their pages read and create friendly competition between the students. I hope with this trip my most ravenous readers will see that college is truly an option for them. With a campus visit, they will be able to picture themselves attending a university in the near future and will be able to draw on the experience to push them through their senior year. Please give my students the chance to experience college life; it’s an opportunity they would not otherwise receive. Thank you!
