Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
At our low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. To help with the many challenges they face, I want to make sure they have the same opportunities as other students do. My students are the top in their class with most of them being in the top 10% and many are in the top 5%. They are officers in such organizations as National Honor Society, Student Council, Health Occupations Students of America and Future Business Leaders of America.
All my students are participants in the YMCA Y-Achievers program that prepares them with the college and career readiness skills they need for their future.
They are true servant leaders who participate in community service and are changing the culture in their school. These are the students that any educator or administrator would want to be in their class or school. As an educator, it gives you hope when you have students who are self-motivated and have the will and desire to make real change.
My Project
Horace Mann, the father of education, once said: “Education is the great equalizer of the condition of men.” What he failed to mention was not every student has the same opportunities to achieve that higher education. One of the biggest hurdles for low income/minority students like the ones I serve is the simple fact that less than 20% of them will attend a university or college outside of their hometown. However, the students who I teach are achieving at the highest level: they have top SAT and ACT scores and are National Merit Scholars, leaders of the National Honor Society, and members of Student Council. They are also all in the YMCA Youth and Government Program, which teaches them to be servant leaders and the core values of respect, responsibility, honesty, and caring.
The truth is that taking these students to see the top HBCUs, Ivy League, public, and private universities will allow them to see themselves at those universities and change their lives forever.
The sad realization is: if they can’t see themselves at that university, then more than likely they won’t go. Hence the tagline “If you fund it, they will go.” We aren’t just talking about going on a college visit, but about really creating a visual of attending that university, which could make a difference in their own lives, their communities, and families. I do believe it changes the culture of a school and community when students achieve great goals, thereby showing those who come behind that it can be done. Help me facilitate this change by funding this project.
