Why do we send 97 percent of our students to college and yet have only one LCD projector in the whole school? I teach in a public high school in San Francisco, where 99 percent of our students are of color, and 75 percent of them will be the first in their families to attend college. In addition to its college-prep focus, the school prepares students to become leaders in their community by interrupting social inequities. Students do 140 hours of service to graduate and complete two projects to make their community a better place. They share their findings in 45-minute exhibitions to the public.

Like most public schools in California, we suffer from woeful technology. With the recent state budget cuts, our current technology budget is $0. Our students want to use PowerPoint for their presentations but are relegated to creating hand-made visuals that often look unprofessional. Each Spring, during presentation season, we see students fighting over the one LCD projector and teachers scampering to borrow their friends' projectors. All of this anxious energy, of course, could be better used on teaching and learning.

That's why I ask you to help fund an LCD projector for our students. Having another projector would mean better presentations, better technology skills, less anxiety, and more professional events for our community.

I deliberately chose the cheapest LCD projector found on DonorsChoose. After all, I know that donors shy away from funding projectors. But I know you can appreciate the need we have and the benefits the projector would bring. Please consider helping our college-bound students to have the tools and experiences necessary to make college-ready presentations and to succeed in college. Thank you so much.
