College Commitment Event 2025

Help me give my students access to college by providing needed supplies as they trasition to their next steps.

My Project

The dorm room supplies (bedding, cleaning, technology accessories, and laundry supplues) I have included in this project will be used to create access to college by providing basic needs for success. Maslow's hierarchy of needs essentially says that when our basic needs are not met, it is hard to succeed in higher thinking/learning. I have also included school supplies that will be used by students to help them study for their classes. All of these supplies are crafted into "dorm baskets" with essential supplies. Annually we are able to create 20-25 of these baskets thanks to DonorsChoose and staff donations.

At the College Commitment event we celebrate our college bound students with dorm basket giveaways, commitment shout-outs, and an alumni panel will gives tips for students' first year in college.

This gives a direct bridge from our current graduating seniors and alumni they can relate to. During this time we also give our the baskets (which would be funded by this project) to students who have made commitments to their next step- attending college. It celebrates their accomplishments and commitment, while giving some tangible resources they can take with them. Finally, this event is a part of a national campaign to encourage assess to college.

This is really all about providing practical items, that we know many college students to not have the ability to fund themselves. The "dorm basket" giveaways are a key part of this event. This also creates an excitement around leaving for college, and encourages student to follow through because they have support via the supplies and knowledge to guide them.
