Students engage in 10th grade history through a process of self-discovery and interactive pedagogy.
Students have an opportunity to learn history with dynamic activities that make history come alive for students who might otherwise find the subject remote, boring, or inaccessible. A way that helps students stay organized and engaged is complimentary materials that are put in a reader. The reader is similar to what college professors use for case studies or a compilation of readings from various resources. The reader for high school students includes worksheets that they will complete in class, resources that show them how to write a paper and use MLA format, and a homework section with all their homework in. These readers need specific supplies to put them together. Right now I am paying out of pocket to fund the materials needed to create these fabulous readers. It has become clear that the students really appreciate them and value them. Not 1 student has lost their reader this school year. The financial burden to pay for these materials has started to weigh on me. Me paying for the supplies is a short term solution. I cannot pay for the materials anymore unless I take up a second job.
The resources that I need are simple. I already wrote a grant to obtain the binding machine. Now, all I need are the supplies to put the readers together. The supplies include regular paper, card stock for the cover, and clear covers for the back, and GBC comb bindings. These resources will allow students to have readers for every unit I teach. These materials will also help the readers stay in talk for the whole time they use them.
This donation will help students learn history and get ready for college. They will already know how to use bound supplementary materials and know how resourceful they are. I work in an urban high school where there is very little resources to even teach let alone do something innovative. These readers help students stay organized and on top of their work. They work diligently on the worksheets in the reader and use the resources for their writing assignment. It is an amazing addition to the learning.
