Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

At our school, a New York City public school in the Bronx, I teach AP Computer Science and Intro to programming to high school seniors. My students have responded really well to the curriculum and we have increased our level of participation in these courses over the last 4 years.

In my AP CS course last year, we doubled enrollment to two full sections.

Seeing people that my students can connect with represented in my physical classroom space and curriculum is key. Last year we celebrated that 66% of my students who took my AP CS class identify as female, 71% identify as Hispanic/Latinx, 26% identify as Black, and 3% identify as Asian. In my curriculum, we are focusing on social justice in tech, what it means to be a digital citizen and what the inalienable rights of digital citizens should be.

In my Intro to programming elective, my students learn JavaScript and how to draw and animate on the computer, culminating in an animated short film festival, in the winter. My students also learn HTML & CSS in the Spring and create dynamic web pages using adobe creative suite and other web builders.

My Project

These tables will work as a base for a collaborative programming workstation in my classroom. Students will leverage this hub to build apps and short films in JavaScript and design and construct website using HTML/CSS. The larger tables will have enough room for desktops with larger screens, enabling split screen programming to support my students who need digital scaffolds and the use of a mouse over a trackpad. These stations will benefit all of my students but will really help support my students with IEPs. They will also act as a wonderful workspace for designing, mapping and building apps, with desktop space to work on paper and then reference those plans as they come to life on the computer.
