My Students

"Economically Challenged Yet Passionate About Going to College!" My students are some of the best students a teacher could ask for. They are so well mannered and they appreciate a classroom culture with structure, discipline, high expectations, and tons of "Motherly Love". I work with the AVID 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students that mainly come from well educated homes, but may face some economic disadvantages. What is AVID? AVID means Advance Via Individual Determination. Regardless of their life circumstances, AVID students overcome obstacles and achieve success. They graduate and attend college at higher rates, but more importantly, they can think critically, collaborate, and set high expectations to confidently conquer the challenges that await them. With all the odds against them, they come to school everyday with positive attitudes, a willingness to learn, and a passion for going to college!

My Project

My scholars will have the opportunity to take their learning experience to another level by having collaborative study groups. Due to being in an overpopulated school, my classroom is housed in a small, dated mobile unit. My scholars prefer to learn outdoors because it allows for more space and fresh air. To accommodate the scholars workspace, we will need crates to serve as an alternative to chairs and clipboards to write on. Forming these collaborative study groups will give my scholars a chance to improve test scores, class grades, and overall academic performance, while preparing them to become college and career ready. Giving scholars the opportunity to take ownership of their own learning provides them with accountability and sparks a continued interest in education. These materials will be the beginning to something new in a scholar's life. These materials would not only help with accomplishing the goal of collaboration, but provide a chance for scholars to sit and have some really good academic conversations outside of the classroom.
