My Students

Middle school is a highly formative time in a child's life. Middle school students are constantly learning about themselves, others, and the world in which they live. During this period of rapid growth, the learning needs of kid vary greatly.

My middle school students are energetic, enthusiastic, and empathetic.

They need a diverse learning environment and a range of supplies to allow them to develop both academically and socially.

Our school is located in the center of the city and serves 625 students from the city itself and surrounding towns. Our school's magnet theme is Social Justice and 100% of our graduates have been accepted into college.

My Project

Gone are the days of sitting and solving math problems out of the text book. Students in my classes bring math concepts to life through problem solving and discussion. To promote collaboration in the math classroom, students work in small groups to tackle intense problems. They are encouraged to try multiple methods, use various strategies, and model their thinking as they work to solve problems visually and algebraically.

Through this project, students will be given some of the basic tools to help them engage in mathematical discourse.

The chart paper will serve as their canvas to draw models, make graphs, and write equations. The super-sticky Post It format allows us to display solutions for discussion and comparison. It also allows us to spread around the room instead of crowding around a table. The calculators allow all students to access higher-level concepts by taking the focus off computation skills that sometimes impede problem solving.
