Collaborative Learning and Formative Assessment

My students need these materials such as Dry Erase Lapboards, Bookcase, and Easel Pads to engage in collaborative learning, and they will allow me to use formative assessments to quickly gauge their understanding.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We are a neighborhood school on the west side of Chicago. Our student population is approximately 90% Hispanic and Latino and 8% African American, and nearly 100% are eligible for free or reduced price lunch.

People assume that because we are a neighborhood school, and not a magnet, selective enrollment, or charter that we must struggle to keep our students in line and ready academically - they would be mistaken.

Our building is an oasis in the middle of what can be a chaotic and violent neighborhood. We have a 90% daily attendance rate, our freshmen on-track rate has been over 95% for the last three years, as has been our graduation rate. We are only one of a handful of neighborhood schools with a 1 rating in CPS, and the only one in our network. Our students are the reason for these achievements. They drive us to be better teachers every day, and they deserve the same materials and opportunities provided to the wealthier schools in the city and the state. We will do everything in our power to make that happen.

My Project

One of my goals as an educator is to act as a facilitator for learning rather than the source of all knowledge. All of these supplies will help me achieve this goal by allowing students to work in small collaborative groups, but still assess their understanding through use of the individual white boards.

Putting students in charge of their learning is an empowering experience for them.

They can lead discussions, teach each other, problem solve, and improve their critical thinking skills. Using these boards will allow me to ask questions and get silent responses from everyone, not just the loudest kid in the room. They can also be used as a tool to measure understanding of new concepts - do kids get it, need a little help, or have no clue? - without embarrassing a student who may need extra support. The easel pads add to this because they allow for movement in the classroom, so I can use easily use station work to check for comprehension and aid collaborative discussion among students.
