My Project

One specific struggle we’ve seen with students after the pandemic is in how students collaborate with their classmates and we would like students to have laptops so they can collaborate together through station work (Doubet, 2022). Many students struggle to take both the initiative to collaborate and to successfully work through the myriad challenges of collaboration, including revising based on feedback and navigating challenging group dynamics. Collaboration draws across the five domains of socio-emotional learning as outlined by the Collaborative for Social and Emotional Learning, including relationship skills, social awareness, and self-management (CASEL, 2020). We also know from educational research (e.g. Garcia et al., 2021 )from government agencies (e.g. Department of Labor, 2020) that soft skills like collaboration are both “key to the success of young workers in the 21st-century workplace” and to academic, social, and emotional success in classrooms.

We would like to purchase four laptops that we can use for station activities so that students can learn to effectively collaborate with each other.

We will outline roles and responsibilities for each group member as they travel to each station activity and we will design activities that push students to co-construct knowledge together. By doing these activities on computers, students will also have the opportunity to edit and revise on collaborative platforms (like Google Docs) and become more familiar with the tools that they will be expected to use in the workplace. Developing a collaborative culture in our classroom will advance both student learning as students begin to see each other as resources and will support their socioemotional well-being as they form new meaningful relationships with their classmates through engagement in academics.
