Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach in central Utah. My students are eager 6th and 7th graders. My students are learning either English or Spanish. The Spanish courses I teach are electives and are designed for students who want to learn the second most spoken language in our community. My ESL classes are designed for students whose primary language is not English. First and second generation ELL students are growing exponentially in my community. All of my students make up a growing population that continues to be more and more diverse.
My students accept the daily challenge of expanding their language skills.
They love hand's on activities that require collaboration. My students know that language output is essential when learning a new language and they love to practice their growing vocabulary with a variety of learning strategies that require collaboration. My students know that the power of language lies in making connections.
I love all my students because they are dedicated learners that accept the challenge of learning a new language. I love to teach new students every year because they all teach me new ways to think and all have a unique purpose to implement their new found language skills.
My Project
Collaboration is essential for language learning. To negotiate meaning, a community is required. Flexible seating is conducive to creating a sense of community. Currently my students can work at their desks, on the floor, or on a round table on the back. Making sure students are comfortable is essential for their ability to learn and be engaged. The traditional desks I have in my classroom are great for partner work but my students would benefit from more spaces for group work.
My students are noticeably more willing to engage in a group and create a sense of community when they are in a space that is comfortable and conducive for a discussion.
The products that I have selected will help my students by giving them additional seating options to participate more in group settings. The wobble stools are designed to allow movement and can be moved easily. These will be extremely beneficial for some students that just need to get the wiggles out. They can also be used as an alternative chair if needed! These chairs would be great for the empty table at the back of my room. The answer board supply center can be placed at one of the group stations to facilitate the sharing of language for timid participants.
I have seen how giving my students more comfortable options for group work can positively affect a classroom community and create a safer space for language to be developed.
